How Mock Exams Can Boost 11+ Success

Updated: Jul 21

As this year’s 11+ exams approach, it’s natural for both children and parents to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. One of the most effective ways to build confidence and sharpen skills ahead of the big day is through mock exams.

Mock exams offer more than a simple practice run—they give children a chance to develop essential test techniques, such as time management, question prioritisation, and stamina for sitting longer papers. These skills can make a real difference on exam day, especially under timed conditions.

Equally important is helping children overcome exam nerves. Sitting a paper in a formal setting with unfamiliar faces can feel daunting at first, but regular mock exam experiences make the real thing feel far less intimidating. Children begin to recognise the format, pace, and expectations, which in turn helps to reduce anxiety.

Another key benefit is exposure to a wide variety of questions in Maths and English. Mock papers are designed to reflect the diversity of content found in different 11+ exams, helping children apply their knowledge flexibly and avoid being thrown by unfamiliar wording or unusual question types.

To support my students in the lead-up to the 11+, I run a series of mock exams across the spring and summer terms of Year 5 in Newton Abbot. These are designed to complement our weekly sessions, giving children the best possible chance to succeed by practising under realistic conditions.

If your child is preparing for the 11+, mock exams can be a valuable and reassuring part of the journey—building confidence, refining skills, and helping them feel truly ready for the challenge ahead. Get in touch if you're considering a grammar school for your child's next step in education.
