Preparing for the 11+ is most effective when it’s gradual, structured, and focused on building confidence and strong core skills. As an experienced teacher and tutor, I support children by creating well-paced, engaging group sessions tailored to each child’s needs. With over a decade of teaching experience, I understand how to develop the confidence and competence required for 11 Plus success.
Torbay grammar schools, like Torquay Boys’ Grammar and Torquay Girls’ Grammar use the GL Assessment format, covering English (comprehension, grammar, vocabulary) and Maths. These consist of two 50 minute exams, each consisting of 50 exam questions, covering a breadth of exam content from Key Stage Two curriculum objectives.
My 11 Plus groups comprise of a mixture of English and Maths, placing a strong emphasis on ambitious vocabulary, technical grammar, and accurate punctuation—key elements for success in the English paper. I weave these skills across my sessions, ensuring students gain a rich understanding and have plenty of practice to apply what they have learnt. In Maths, I focus on deepening children’s fundamental grasp of core concepts, using a wide range of resources to engage my students and to suit different learning styles. These skills are the building blocks to learning more abstract methods required in Years 5 and 6.
In my Year 5 11+ groups, we practise the timed nature of the 11 Plus exam and complete short weekly tests to develop exam technique, especially time management and accuracy. From the spring term onwards, I hold regular face-to-face mock exams for tutees, where they can practise and embed everything they have learnt by completing different test papers and increasing their exposure to a wide range of exam content. These are fantastic opportunities ahead of the real exam that they will sit in the September they start in Year 6 and students receive personalised reports and assessment feedback highlighting strengths and areas for development.
New 11 Plus preparation groups are starting in September for children entering Years 3, 4 and 5. These small, supportive groups build knowledge and skills progressively and develop confidence early on. If you're looking for high-quality, expertly tailored preparation from a committed, supportive and experienced tutor, these sessions offer an excellent foundation for your child’s 11 Plus journey.
