Is your child bright and curious? Do you wonder whether a grammar school like Torquay Girls or Torquay Boys might be the right fit for their future? Are you starting to think about the 11+ but unsure where to begin?
The journey to the 11+ exam may seem like a distant goal when your child is only in Year 3 or 4, but starting your child's preparation early really does make a difference. Children who succeed are often those who have been gradually and consistently exposed to the kinds of vocabulary, thinking skills, and problem-solving techniques that the 11+ demands.
Why does early preparation matter?
📚 Vocabulary matters. The 11+ tests include complex texts to assess children's reading comprehension, requiring them to understand and use ambitious, high-level vocabulary. The earlier your child is exposed to rich language through reading, discussion, and guided learning, the more naturally they’ll develop the skills they need.
🧠 Curriculum content builds slowly. Key areas of the English and Maths curriculum—like fractions, grammar terminology, and inference skills—are introduced over time. By starting early, children can revisit and consolidate their understanding without pressure, leading to deeper learning and stronger confidence.
🔁 Practice builds confidence. Like any skill, success in the 11+ comes from familiarity and practice. Children benefit from repeated exposure to question types, time constraints, and strategic thinking. Early and regular practice helps reduce anxiety and makes the exam feel manageable, not overwhelming. It develops skills for life.
If you’re beginning to think about your child’s secondary school journey and are considering a selective school like Torquay Girls or Torquay Boys, now is a great time to start laying the foundations.
I’m excited to continue offering small-group courses with new groups starting this September for children entering Year 3, Year 4 or Year 5. These friendly, focused groups (maximum 4 children per group) are designed to build the key skills needed for the 11+, while nurturing your child’s confidence, creativity and love of learning.
