Finding the Right Local Tutor for Your Needs

Updated: Sep 16

Are you wondering how best to support your child with their learning? Worried they might be falling behind at school, losing confidence, or struggling with their schoolwork? Or perhaps you're looking for a friendly, experienced tutor who can help prepare them for the 11 Plus or SATs in a calm, supportive way?

You're not alone. I'm here to help.

What Do You Look for in a Tutor?

When you’re choosing a tutor (or any professional) to work with your child, it’s worth doing a little homework yourself. Look for someone with recent safeguarding training, who completes regular CPD to keep their teaching fresh, and holds a DBS certificate registered on the Update Service so you know checks are kept current. Parent reviews—whether on Google, Facebook or similar—can give you a real insight into their approach. Take a few minutes to browse their website or social media page too: is it up to date, and do the activities or learning they share reflect the values and style you want for your child’s education? A little research up front can help you find someone who’s a great fit both professionally and personally.

Why Choose Me as Your Child’s Tutor?

With over 13 years of teaching experience in primary schools, I offer a calm, friendly, and encouraging environment where every child feels valued and supported. Based in Chudleigh, I work with families across the local area to help primary-aged children build confidence and make real progress in English and Maths. I always maintain a DBS certificate on the Update Service and complete regular CPD in terms of safeguarding and child protection.

Whether your child is finding things tricky or just needs a boost, I adapt my sessions to meet their individual needs whether as a one to one or group session. I use a wide range of resources, games, and hands-on activities to make learning fun, engaging, and inclusive—so your child enjoys their sessions as much as they learn from them! I believe strongly in helping children rediscover their self-belief, celebrating every step of progress and building a strong foundation for future learning. You can see a variety of these activities on my social media and website to see if my approach suits the style you're looking for.

I also run small group sessions for 11 Plus preparation (for Years 3, 4, and 5) for the Torquay Girls' and Boys' Schools, and SATs booster groups for those sitting their Year 6 tests next summer. These groups are friendly, structured, and supportive, helping children approach their next steps with confidence and clarity.

Above all, I pride myself on building positive relationships with the children I teach and their families. I take the time to get to know each child as an individual, making sure they feel safe, understood, and motivated to succeed and keep you, their parent, informed every step of the way with session feedback.

If you're looking for a supportive local tutor who truly cares, I’d love to help your child thrive. Take a look at my Google page for reviews from other parents and read about what they think of Teign Valley Tutoring.
